Pratik Türkçe Serisi-10: Şimdi/ Şu An - Şimdiki Zaman- ( Now, At the Moment - Present Continious)

In Turkish, for actions happening now, the suffix -yor is added to the verb root. Words like “now” (şimdi), “at the moment” (şu an), “this minute” (şu dakika), and “suddenly” (aniden) indicate that the action is in the present continuous tense.

One important point to remember is that Turkish is an agglutinative language, meaning it builds meaning by adding suffixes to the end of words. The sentence structure follows the Subject–Object–Verb order, and in a regular sentence, the verb always comes at the end.

Another key point is that nouns also appear at the end of the sentence, just like verbs. What distinguishes a verb from a noun is the ability to take the infinitive suffix -mek/-mak.

For example: Bu bir okul. (‘-mak’ suffix cannot be added, because okul is the name of an entity.)

Ali şimdi uyuyor. (‘uyu-’ is the verb root. It can take the suffix ‘-mak’: uyu-mak.)

Let’s examine the following example sentences.

                                                    Jo şimdi yemek yiyor.

İkinci resimde:  (Gitar) çal- (-mak): Ren şimdi ne yapıyor?
                                                        Ren şimdi gitar çalıyor.

Üçüncü resimde: (Su)  iç- (-mek): Ayşe şimdi ne yapıyor?
                                                       Ayşe şimdi su içiyor.
